To put it into context, 2003 was the year D&D went to 3.5 Savage Worlds was first released and titles like Mutants & Masterminds and Unknown Armies were picking up awards. By today's more streamlined RPG standards, this 2003 edition ruleset feels crufty and overdone. So what's the system like? The Dark Eye: Basic Rules from 2003 is mainly a point buy system, using a traditional stat set of attributes, with lots of derived stats, separately purchased skills, and roll-under resolution. But I'm only aware of this one book – “The Dark Eye: Basic Rules” – that was published in English, not counting video game guides. In Europe, Das Schwarze Auge is currently ramping up its 5th edition release. In Europe, there is an extensive collection of “Das Schwarze Auge” non-English RPG material available, particularly source books and adventures that take place in Aventuria, the game's principal campaign setting. ![]() In fact I think there is a lengthy track record between the RPG and related computer games over the years, but that's a different story. The Dark Eye has since been used to power the Drakensang computer games. FanPro in 2007 transferred the license to the RPG to another gaming company. ![]() As the wiki page on FanPro describes, the English translation “did not fare well in the marketplace”. In 2003 publishers FanPro decided to make a foray into the English-speaking market, and produced an English-language translation through their American subsidiary. I have not managed to get a group to play it. I picked up a copy at a song years ago when, sadly, one of my area FLGS went out of business. (additional translations include French, Dutch and Italian). The RPG launched in 1983 from what I know of it, under the name “Das Schwarze Auge”, it is to German-speaking central Europe what the Dungeons & Dragons legacy has been to the U.S. The Dark Eye RPG has been around for thirty years, but few people outside of Europe are likely to have heard of it.
